Office 365 for Students
Office 365 for Students
Microsoft Office 365—often shortened to O365—is the name for the latest computer, mobile, and Web-enabled versions of email, Office, and related services. With O365, email storage will be increased to 50 GB, online file storage will be increased to 5 TB (that’s 5,000 GB), and versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook will be available to install or use online. Office 365 apps are also integrated with other Microsoft cloud services, such as SharePoint and OneDrive, and can be accessed directly in those services.
Office 365 comes with a full version of Office and familiar Office applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote and more. Office 365 is a user-based service and allows each student to install on PCs or Macs, and tablets (iPad), and access Office mobile applications on iPhone and Android phones. (Office Mobile applications are included with all Windows phones).
Some key benefits of using Office 365 include the following:
- Install on up to 5 compatible PCs and Macs, plus 5 tablets
- Use with OneDrive for automatic device syncing
- Gain valuable skills on the world's most popular document software
- Always use Microsoft’s latest Office software
To install and access O365, go to portal.office.com and sign in with your Medaille username (format: firstname.lastname@example.org) and password then click the "Install Software" button near the top right.
If you already have an older version of Office installed, you might be asked to uninstall it. We recommend that you do so to avoid conflicts between versions.
Medaille made the decision to go with Office 365 due to the adoption of Microsoft Office at Medaille and at the bulk of businesses. In addition, Office 365 met our Data Security Requirements for the cloud storage needs of our researchers. Using an all-inclusive application such as Office 365 will result in a streamlined experience for our user community.
Sign in (or go to login.microsoftonline.com/) with your Medaille email address (userID in the format abc123). If you haven't installed Office 365 apps yet, you will be taken to the installation page. Self-sign up is not enabled for Medaille Faculty or Staff.
Note: Installing Office 365 apps will replace any current Office installations you have on your computer or device!
At this time, Medaille IT is providing access to Office Online, Exchange Online, Medaille OneDrive. We continue to review the other Office 365 services and will release them as we can provide support for them.
Some other services, such as PowerBI and some features of Skype for Business, can require additional licenses that result in charges beyond that which is centrally funded. Along with developing a capacity to support additional services, Medaille IT is developing a way for departments to "order" licenses that are not included in the standard Office 365 service offering.
