Residence Hall Computer Procedures



Requirements for Dorm Computers

PC/Laptop

  • For access to the Medaille Campus Network you must have Windows 95, 98, ME, NT 4.0, Windows2000 Pro, or Windows XP with a Network Interface Card (NIC) and a Ethernet patch cable.
  • Machines running Windows 95, 98, or Millennium, must have a minimum of 32 megs of memory, 10/100Mbit Network Card, and Internet Explorer 5.01 and above or Netscape 4.7 and above.
  • Machines running Windows 2000 Pro, NT 4.0, or Windows XP must have a minimum of 64 megs of memory, 10/100Mbit Network Card, and Internet Explorer 5.01 and above or Netscape 4.7 and above.
  • The only protocol that will be supported is TCP/IP, all others MUST be removed off your machine. See below to see which protocols are installed on your machine.


Windows 95, 98, and Millennium

  • Click on the START BUTTON
  • Go to SETTINGS
  • Click on CONTROL PANEL
  • Double click on NETWORK
  • On the CONFIGURATION tab, you will see a list of Clients, Adapters, and Protocols. Clients will have a picture of a Computer next to it, Adapters will have a picture of a Circuit Board next to it and Protocols will have a picture of Cable Joining another cable next to it. For PROTOCOLS, make sureTCP/IP is the only one installed. REMOVE the others.


Windows 2000 Professional

  • Click on the START BUTTON
  • Go to SETTINGS
  • Click on CONTROL PANEL
  • Double click on NETWORK and DIAL-UP CONNECTIONS
  • Double Click on Local Area Connection
  • Click PROPERTIES
  • You will see a list of Clients, Adapters, and Protocols.
  • Clients will have a picture of a Computer next to it, Adapters will have a picture of a Circuit Board next to it and Protocols will have a picture of Cable joining another cable next to it. For PROTOCOLS, make sure TCP/IP is the only one installed. UNINSTALL the others.


Windows XP

  • Click on the START BUTTON
  • Click on CONTROL PANEL
  • Click on NETWORK and INTERNET CONNECTIONS
  • Double click on NETWORK CONNECTIONS
  • Double Click on LOCAL AREA CONNECTIONS
  • You will see a list of Clients, Adapters, and Protocols.
  • Clients will have a picture of a Computer next to it, Adapters will have a picture of a Circuit Board next to it and Protocols will have a picture of Cable joining another cable next to it. For PROTOCOLS, make sure TCP/IP is the only one installed. UNINSTALL the others.

NT 4.0

  • Click on the START BUTTON
  • Go to SETTINGS
  • Click on CONTROL PANEL
  • Double click on NETWORK
  • Click on the PROTOCOLS tab
  • Only keep TCP/IP, remove all others.

- To get on the Internet you need an IP address assigned to your computer. In order to receive an IP address, we need the hardware address off the network card in the computer. There are several ways to get the hardware address, but we will outline the easiest for each operating system.


Windows 95, 98, and Millennium

  • Click on the START BUTTON
  • Click on RUN
  • Type WINIPCFG and hit ENTER
  • Record the information in the ADAPTER ADDRESS BOX (xx-xx-xx-xx-xx-xx)
  • Close the window
  • Submit ADAPTER ADDRESS to the IS&T Department to obtain an IP Address.


Windows 2000 Professional, NT 4.0 and Windows XP

  • Click on the START BUTTON
  • Click on RUN
  • Type CMD and hit ENTER
  • In the COMMAND window, type IPCONFIG /ALL
  • Record the information on the line that says PHYSICAL ADDRESS (xx-xx-xx-xx-xx-xx)
  • Type EXIT and hit ENTER
  • Submit PHYSICAL ADDRESS to the IS&T Department (Room M310) to obtain an IP Address.
