1. Official Online
Faculty/Staff and Student Directories I am pleased to announce Take a look at your information. If information is
missing or incorrect, please contact HR department at hrismed@medaille.edu
to request corrections be made. To use this directory to look up students, use the People drop down box and pick Students. Their Medaille email
addresses are listed. There will be a link from the main Medaille web site by the
beginning of May. Stay tuned for more information.
Have you
ever sent an email and wished you could take it back? Using
Microsoft Outlook you can recall a message by opening the message you want to
recall (in the Sent Message
Folder) and then click on the Actions menu options. Next select Recall This Message. Check the
“Tell me if recall succeeds or fails
for each recipient” box to get Outlook to send you email
telling you the status of your recall attempt. This does
NOT delete the original email. If you pick the “Delete unread copies and
replace with a new message” the following is what happens: On the recipient's computer, one of
the following occurs: If the recipient opens the recall
message first, the original message is deleted, and the recipient is informed that
you, the sender, deleted the message from his or her mailbox. If the recipient opens the original
message first, the recall fails, and both the old and new messages are
available. Note that the recall message action is only available using
the Microsoft Outlook program. This is not available using Microsoft Outlook
Web Access from the College’s website.

acquired a site license for Microsoft Office 2003. This allows the software to
be available to students via a temporary license. If the student graduates
from Medaille, they will own the software. Otherwise, they have to uninstall
the software if they have previously installed it on their own PCs. Microsoft Office CDs may be picked up at the
5. Help
Yourself: Use the Password Reset Wizard It's past midnight and the Help Desk
is closed. You're just back from an exhilarating and exhausting season of
paleontological field work in the Patagonian uplands. You haven't read your
email in weeks. But ... you can't remember your
password! If you're the lucky person in this hypothetical scenario, you could
help yourself with the Password Reset Wizard. You set up the Wizard using a piece
of personal information (maybe your grandma's seldom-used middle name?) that
nobody else will know. Enter a simple question and answer. Then, in time of
need, by answering your own question you can do for yourself what the Help Desk
would do for you at a more reasonable hour. See the instructions at http://www.drexel.edu/irt/support/tips/passreset/prwconfig.html.
Of course, you have to do the set-up now, well in advance of your need to use
it.
6. Grading Help Grades for the Spring semester will
be due in early May. Instructions for online grading is available at http://www.medaille.edu/banner/facultyguidetogradesubmission.pdf.
Other informational documents about MedailleOne and getting
your account can be found at http://www.medaille.edu/banner/facultysupport.htm You may seek out help at either our Help
Desk in M310 or in the Remember, there is a 15 minute timeout for inactivity for
MedailleOne. So make sure you save your changes as you go along.
Interruptions while you are grading may cause you to timeout and lose the
grades you have already entered.
7. More Protection for your PC Windows ® Defender is a free program that helps you stay
productive by protecting your computer against pop-ups, slow performance and
security threats caused by spyware and other potentially unwanted software. Computers’ internet connection and speed have been
affected more with Spyware and those nice attractive programs that invade
people’s computer without their concern. The good thing about Windows
Defender is that it downloads the updates automatically. It can be set to
schedule at certain time and it also works on real-time, just like an
Antivirus. To read more about Windows ® Defender go to http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=435bfce7-da2b-4a6a-afa4-f7f14e605a0d&DisplayLang=en
The site for ALP (Accelerated Learning Program) students has
been redesigned. The URL remains the same at alpsite.medaille.edu. The new site has information for all new and existing
students for technology information including: Laptops – Where to call for laptop support. Wireless – How to connect to the wireless network Software – Links to information on Medaille provided
software (office, antivirus, etc) …And many other links to information that the students
need.
9. Microsoft’s new Search Tool Microsoft introduced a new search
tool today that will help people find scholarly articles online. This beta
release is called Windows Live™ Academic Search service. It is designed
to help conduct research across academic journals. This initial release
targets computer science, electrical engineering and physics. They hope to
bring new subjects online soon. Windows Live Academic Search can be
found at http://academic.live.com To read the Microsoft press release

10. Training Videos available John Fronckowiak has created a Medaille College Technology
Training site. It’s available at http://cis.medaille.edu/training/ If you click on the Training Videos link on the left side of
the page, you presented with 2 MedailleOne videos for faculty. There are also
2 WebCT introductory videos. All of these videos give you step by step
instruction with John describing the screens available to you. John will be holding classes in mid May to get you up and
running on WebCT for your summer and fall classes. Look for details on these
classes shortly.
If you are
having WebCT problems and have access to email, please use our email contact – WebCT@medaille.edu. This account is
monitored by several staff members, and is monitored on weekends and over
holidays. The WebCT
email account may also be given out to your students. There is also a plethora of Webct information available from Drexel at http://www.drexel.edu/irt/services/webct/vista/index.html.
·
Making WebCT a Trusted Site: If you use WebCT to store Word
document and Powerpoint presentations, when these files are downloaded, you may
need to access the yellow security bar under the toolbar to tell Internet
Explorer that it’s OK to download the content. You can prevent this problem by
adding the WebCT site to your list of trusted sites. To do this from internet
Explorer, go to the Tools, Internet Options menu items. Then click on the
Security tab. Click on the Trusted Sites icon, then click on the Sites button.
In the Add sites to this zone textbox enter the WebCT site name:
vle.dcollege.net, then click on the Add button. Click the OK button to close
the Trusted Sites dialog box, and then click on the OK button again to close
the Internet Options dialog box. You should now be able to access
your site content without explicitly needing to indicate to Internet Explorer
that you want to download. · In the Grade Book, use caution when making changes to "calculated" columns, that is, columns you use to add up several scores and display only one "calculated" score for students. If you have manually entered grades in a calculated column and now want to change that column to a numeric column, you should first export the grades. After you have exported and saved the CSV to your Desktop, you can convert the column. All the grades will be gone. Now import the original grades from your Desktop to repopulate your new numeric column. If you do not follow this procedure, you will lose the original grades. ·
Error Session Already
Running in WebCT: The message “Error Session Already Running” happens in
WebCT when you try to open a second course by clicking on a link in
MedailleOne. To prevent this from happening, when you want to view
another course in WebCT, rather than clicking on the link in MedailleOne, click
on the My WebCT link in the top
right corner of the WebCT window and choose your course from there. |
