1.  Requesting AV equipment from NMI

Need AV help with the Smart Classrooms or the lecture hall?  Need to use a microphone for your presentation?  You may now request AV equipment from the New Media Institute via email at IT_AV@medaille.edu.   This account is monitored by several staff members, and is monitored on weekends and over holidays.  To make sure your request can be filled, please give us at least 1 week’s notice.

2.  End of the Road for IE on the Mac

Microsoft ended its support for Internet Explorer on the Macintosh as of the end of 2005. As of January 31, 2006, IE will no longer be available for download from Mactopia. Notice of this withdrawal of support and development was given by Microsoft in June 2003.

IT recommends that Macintosh users who have been using Internet Explorer switch to Safari, included with Mac OS X since version 10.2. Safari is capable of importing your IE favorites and uses the MacOS keychain to store usernames and passwords, so no information should be lost in migration.

3My old password is so last month, how do I change it?

Your username/password gives you access to all electronic technology at Medaille College.  Via MedailleOne, you have access to your personal information, and if you are faculty, your courses, and WebCT.  Email and the Medaille network are also accessed via this combination.  Thusly, you should keep your username/password confidential and change the password every 60 days.

To change your password:

-          go to https://accounts.medaille.edu/ and log in using your email ID and your current password.

-          Click on the large key icon that is located in the middle of the page

-          Enter your old password and your new password twice.  There are a few rules to remember when creating your new password:

o        1. The password must be between 6 and 8 characters in length.

o        2. It must have at least two letters and at lease one non-letter in it.

o        3. The password can't be a word in any dictionary.

o        4. The new password has to be different than the old one in at least three characters. That is, you can't just change one character.

o        5. If you ignore the beginning and ending characters that are not letters, the remaining characters must contain a non-letter.

-          Click on OK and your password is now changed.

4.  IT technology request forms

“I would like to order a Flux Capacitor, where do I find the form for that?”

IT technology request forms (and other important college forms) can be downloaded and printed out from:

http://www.medaille.edu/forms

Authorizing signatures are required.  You must have your department head sign these.  The form then needs to be sent to the IT department for review.   Forms are no longer necessary for data/reporting requests.  Those should be done via email to helpdesk@medaille.edu.

5.  Virus definitions are out of date

My computer is telling me that my virus definitions are out of date.

If you get a message on your computer stating your virus definitions are out of date, please notify the helpdesk either by calling us at 880-2282 or send us an email at helpdesk@medaille.edu

You can update your virus definitions yourself by doing the following:

-          Click on Start -> All Programs -> Symantec Client Security -> Symantec AntiVirus

-          Click on the Live Update button

-          Click on Next when the Live Update window appears

-          Click on Finish when it is done.

-

Your virus definitions will now be up to date.

6.  Wireless access for students in the Main Building

“My students keep asking for the wireless key, what is that and how do they get it?”

The WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy, a security protocol for wireless local area networks (WLANs) ) key is a code that is used by our wireless router to help keep it secure.  If someone wants to connect to the wireless network, they must enter this code into their wireless connection properties.  The IT department does not give out the WEP key to students.  We will give it out to professors and they can decide if they want to give it out to their students.  All a professor has to do is to stop in the IT office and request it.

We will be expanding our wireless connectivity in the Main Building this semester, making it reachable from all classrooms.

7.  Hyperion training available

Hyperion, the software used for adhoc Banner reporting – is available.  Training is held on Wednesdays 12:30-2:00 in H215.  Reservations are required.  Contact the IT department at

716-880-2282 to reserve your seat.

8.  How to get WebCT help

If you are having WebCT problems and have access to email, please use our new email contact – WebCT@medaille.edu.  This account is monitored by several staff members, and is monitored on weekends and over holidays.

The WebCT email account may also be given out to your students.

There is also a plethora of Webct information available from Drexel at http://www.drexel.edu/irt/services/webct/vista/index.html

9.  WebCT Tips for This Month

*Submitting Assignments with Attachments

Yes, Medaille students can submit their assignments with attachments in WebCT Vista. They may find it easier, however, if they first watch a short video that illustrated the process.

There is a link in the Student Orientation section in WebCT Vista, or they may go directly to

http://broadcast.drexel.edu:8080/ramgen/classes/Student_Demos/Student_DemosSubmittingAssignments_011206-150k.rm.

* WebCT Vista enhancements in Service Pack 6 include improved HTML Creator for home page design and page authoring; the ability to hide Sections in your Course List; and a more granular student tracking capability. You can watch a short video illustrating these. The link is posted in the DES-101 section in WebCT Vista, or you can go directly to

http://broadcast.drexel.edu:8080/swf/classes/VISTA_DEMO_SP6/VISTA_DEMO_S_^Three_Highlights_01_09_06.swf.

* If html pages load slowly when you edit them in WebCT Vista, you can make some minor adjustments to speed up the process. Instructions in pdf format can be accessed at

http://broadcast.drexel.edu:8080/pdf/classes/VISTA_DEMO_SP6/VISTA_DEMO_SP6Slow_Page_Loads.pdf.

* The new version of Firefox (v1.5) is problematic with WebCT Vista according to some reports. We recommend that you use Firefox v1.0.7. If you had already installed v1.5, you'll need to uninstall it and then re-install v1.0.7.

* You can log in to WebCT Vista directly as an alternative to using the MedailleOne portal. Go to http://vle.dcollege.net, click on Medaille College, click on Log In, enter your Medaille email username and password, and click OK.

* Respondus, the quiz-creation software that works seamlessly with WebCT Vista, has released some useful video snippets. They are available in the DES-101 Course Designers Forum section in WebCT Vista. If you do not see that on your Course List, email webct@drexel.edu and we'll enroll you.

10.  Browsers for Mac Users of WebCT Vista

With the installation of the latest Service Pack on Vista, we find that

Internet Explorer is no longer shown as a supported web browser for the Macintosh platform. This is related to Microsoft's cessation of support of IE for the Mac.

We recommend that you use the latest version of Safari in place of IE.

We also recommend that you keep your OS up to date with the latest software updates from Apple. Some of these contain software that is necessary for WebCT Vista to run properly on your computer.

For information about browsers to be used with WebCT, see

http://www.webct.com/tuneup/viewpage?name=tuneup_browser_tuneup_information.
